I was safety right at the finish line. All the boaters did a incredible job. The water was cold, pushy and high.
As for the decision not to do a 2nd run...
There was a discussion, a vote, more discussion by all the competitors about doing a 2nd run. It was decided by the competitors to let the top 5 decide if they wanted to do a 2nd run. 2 wanted to run, 2 didn't and Tao said that he would do what the group wanted. Since it was 2 for and 2 against, the 2nd lap was called off by one of the race officials due to safety concerns.
There was one swim (swimmer was quickly rescued, but the boat was heading fast downstream, and there wasn't really anything that any of the safety folks could do to grab it - given the pace of the race and the number of safety boaters). Also one boater took out early because he flipped and I heard that he banged his head - but I don't know any more of the details (at the safety debrief, he showed up and said he was fine).
