The last time I paddle boated the Canyon it was running 4K cfs and what a hoot that was. Had seven or eight swimmers though the day but no big deal with six kayakers in the water with me and a good paddle crew we were Ting up to the big waves. Awesome.
You are mistaken.
Chronologically, and in the video, the order of shots are Gateway, Hole In The Wall Creek, S-Turn, Big Falls, Blackadar, Lower Blackadar, Trash Can (swimmers), Lone Pine, Kaleidoscope, Little Falls, The Crease, and Surprise. That is the order of the rapids.
The Canyon at the flows of 4k is pretty big. That's when the Surprise hole is most gigantic (in the video, it's more of a rock/pourover.) The portage is dangerous in that not much of an eddy exists to get a paddle raft to shore. As a commercial guide, at those flows our kayaker will go ahead and hook up a rope anchor, then clip the boat with a carabiner at it gets close. It's difficult to stop above the falls in a paddle raft. Our cutoff though is at 5000cfs commercially, we don't run it higher than that.
