Its all about weight distribution. Heaver stuff near the paddler lighter stuff to the bow and stern is how I roll.
Also its worth remembering to pack essentials nearest to openings. For example first aid, water, sunscreen, maps, should all be accessible immediately not packed away in the recesses of your boat behind your stove and sleeping gear.

Oh Its very tempting to fill that huge space in the cockpit; leg area with gear. I would think looooong and hard before setting your self up for entrapment.
