Jim...Shuttles out of Bluff

Just got off the lower this past weekend. We used Jim and his private shuttle company out of Bluff. I don't know the number off the top of my head, but search on here and you will find it real easy. He is essentially the only show in town, but a professional business man who takes your chiddy seriously and will be where he says when he says.

He charges like 170 or 175 i think. He can have your vehicle left at Valle's in the Hat or up in Bluff at SI. For my money, paying him is worth it all day. He has been doing San Juan shuttles for almost 20 years, as local as it gets. His people know the road and will take or your ride. Call Him.

Thanks for the shuttle tip. What else can you tell me about the river? How slow is the lower end? Is it worth while to pack a motor? What kind of weather is normal for the end of May? Should I get a permit for camping on the left side? What is the snow pack like this year?

OK in order of your questions. The last day is usually slow, Braided lots of sand bars to avoid. Although in May even at the end of the month flow should be in the 1,000s. If in fact it is around 2- 3,000 you won't have any issues. Motors are a little difficult considering the size of the river. When the water is low, You will never be able to use it to get out.
Prepare for rain. If you wish to get a permit for the left side, You need to hurry. You get that through the Navajo Nation, And it takes them a while to put it together(about a month). Snowpack in the San Juan mountains is good.

You can drive to the res in Monument Valley (an hour plus? from Sand Island) and get a left side permit as late as the day you put on. We had 4 rafts at 600 cfs our last day and I only remember one time where someone missed the main channel and had to drag a few yards. Love that river.

1. Jim Hardin is the man. good prices and responsible guy
2. you don't need a motor, just keep an eye on the sand bars and leave early if you're going from Slickhorn to Clay Hills. we did it less than a thousand and it sucked but doable. we also did it at 4000 and it was still not super fun, although a whole lot easier.
3. the rest of the trip is a blast. i love the 'juan

Agreed! Jim H is the man to call. 435-672-2455 Very personable guy. An ex-marine who did a nasty tour in Nam.
