It's not looking good for floating the cleanup this year. The flow today was 62 at Union Ave, 96 at the Englewood Wastewater plant.

Not gonna cut it as far as rafting goes.

Ask your gods for rain cuz the water board can't help any.

At any rate, it's about cleaning up the river. The rafting part is fun, but it looks like it's not to be this time. Unless by some miracle we should happen to find another 100cfs in the river on Friday you can keep the boat rolled up and dig out the waders instead. We'll turn lemons into lemonade and use the low water to fish out the tires, shopping carts, road cones, bikes, and who knows what else from out of the mud. Bring a stiff toothed rake, a fishing net or one of those little grabbie thingies they give inmates to pick up trash on the side of the road. If you don't feel like getting wet you can pick up the litter on the banks - there's still plenty of that.

I'll still beg dog for more water in the meantime...

Here's the latest:

The plan is to meet at Habitat Park (where we took out last year) at 8:30, cleanup from
9-1 and BBQ and beers from 1-2.

It sucks that we won't get to get the boats wet but just the same this event is about cleaning up the river, be it from a boat or what have you. If you have em, bring waders, wetsuit, drysuit or what have you. Rakes, shovels, grabbers and so on are all helpful.

I've had my eye on a few items in the chanel for quite sometime now and intend to do whatever it takes to fish em out.

Hope to see you all out there

When: Saturday 4/23/2011
Registration starts at 8:30 am
Cleanup: 9am – 1 pm
After Party: 1-2 pm weather permitting

Dear Sponsors & Supporters,
Low water in the South Platte River has forced us to make some changes to the format of the river cleanup for 2011. The forecasted release from Chatfield Reservoir is only 10cfs, when we need about 100cfs minimum to float rafts and kayaks. Low river conditions, while unfortunate, also present an opportunity to get at some garbage in the river bottom that might otherwise have been missed. So the river cleanup is still on and we would still love your participation.

We are encouraging all volunteers who would have floated the river, to instead bike or walk the banks, river bottom and trails. You should plan to finish your day around 1pm at Habitat Park, where we will host a barbeque (weather permitting). Since there is no need to go with the flow, you can walk either upstream or downstream to the finish at Habitat Park. Habitat Park was last years’ takeout location and is on this map: Please click here to see a map that outlines the route.

This year we have partnered with the Greenway Foundation and Denver Parks and Recreation to increase the visibility of the cleanup and provide more volunteer opportunities for bikers and walkers. There will be onsite volunteer registration at Habitat Park starting at 8:30am. You can either choose one of the project areas set up by Denver Parks and Rec, or just start walking and picking up garbage. Garbage bags will be provided at Habitat Park. The official DPR Event finishes at noon, but we will continue cleaning till 1pm.

If you have filled out a registration form you can simply start walking and cleaning your way towards Habitat park. Full Garbage bags may be left trailside in neat piles for PU by parks staff, or transported to one of the dumpsters provided at Grant-frontier and Habitat Parks. Be aware that this year we are trying to document the areas with heavy trash, and the types of garbage found there. Please take mental notes of heavy trash areas and fill out a form at the end of the day.

When: Saturday 4/23/2011
Registration starts at 8:30 am
Cleanup : 9am – 1 pm
After Party: 1-2 pm (weather permitting)

In addition, any money raised from sponsorships and donations will help support PURE. Protect Urban River Environments is a collaborative effort between local stakeholders to address the trash and pollution issues on The South Platte River in metropolitan Denver. Please consider a donation to PURE

Thank you for your participation and support.
See you out there,

South Platte Cleanup Team

Do NOT remove these items from river

These are Temperature Sensors/Dataloggers.

They are part of ongoing research in the South Platte river.
They are commonly attached to anchors or rocks with chains or ropes or cables … and are often hidden from view.
If you find them in the river they will typically be covered with algae and may have a label asking to be left alone or identifying their owner.

ALSO: SPCURE funds a Biomonitoring project which includes bundles of rocks wired together to provide artificial substrates for research analysis.
Typically they are 3 cylinders approximately 2 feet in diameter by a couple of feet tall placed in the same river stretch.
They are located in a number of sections of the SP … including the urban river. They shouldn’t be moved.
