Ruby Horse Thief in a canoe??

I know it can be done. What I'm wondering is, is there a point (cfs) where it shouldn't be done. I've got friends coming in from Minnesota and they are experienced on lakes and such, would just hate for them to get in a bad place with currents and swirlleys.

there is no level in RHT that causes any sort of whitewater. you should be good to go when ever.

I might use a bit more caution than Tobin... seen some pretty swirly water around blackrocks. swirly enough that I remember thinking, "i wouldn't want to be in a canoe through here..." i don't think well see any such levels this summer though.

I have had friends run it at peak spring run off in canoes. The only problem was that they did the whole thing by lunch. We take students that have no experience down it and to date have had no swimmers.

Around 3000 cfs should be the cut-off for canoeists who are not familiar with whitewater. Granted, there isn't any real "whitewater" in RHT, but the swirly eddy lines around Black Rocks can become difficult for a fully loaded canoe, in inexperienced hands, at flows near and above 3000.

RHT is run by canoeists all the time, including large groups of them, solo boaters, etc. The only real flip-hazard should/well be around Black Rocks. There have been some drowings there, but they weren't wearing PFDs. Your friends should be fine. Flows will be very modest this year. Peak is only predicted at 5-6K. There are actually more riffles at lower water (gravel bar riffles). There will likely be other people on the river too.
