Roll question from Large Irishman

I have a quick question in regards to my roll. I learned my roll this past summer, well at least I thought that was the case, and over the past few weeks I have developed a rather enigmatic/bad habit!

Here is the breakdown on my much maligned tendency:

The odd aspect of this continuing trend is the fact I am still able to roll and right myself. The problem being is that everytime I right myself I end up with only one hand on my paddle. The inboard hand flails after my roll is completed. I roll up and I am clutching the paddle with my outboard hand!

Any suggestions,

Are you taking it off the paddle and grabbing your boat? Very bad habit. Not sure what to tell you other than dont let go of the paddle with either hand.

Don't do another thing until you go down to the local paddle shop and buy yourself a copy of EJ's Rolling and Bracing dvd.

A million people can chime in, but bottom line, if you watch that dvd with your paddle in hand in front of your TV, you will be rolling like a champ in a matter of minutes.

Practice in your local pool before getting on moving water. A very different experience...

Good ? in regards to using the hull.
I would have to say that I am not pushing off my boat.

I will try and concentrate on not letting go of the paddle.

Thanks for the reply,

My guess would be you're not feathering your paddle to get it out of the water. So as you pull your paddle out of the water, you feel resistance that wants to pull you back over, so you let go with your "inboard" hand and allow the paddle to stay in the water pointing upwards.

Just a guess.

I would have to agree with KC. Take your time, don't rush your roll. Make sure to get your hands free of the water and then, once you are finally set, try to roll. What helped me was waiting to feel some air on my hands and then i knew i was set. This also got me comfortable underwater while i was waiting to feel that air, but don' wait too long!

Once you are set, really focus on a strong hip snap and bringing your head out last! be patient, it will come. peace

I disagree...

Keep doing that one hand thing - it's more entertaining. Work on spinning the paddle around your head too. It's cool.
