RMH - "The Epic Begins" (Teaser)

All,

Some more local homegrown video with some local homegrown beats and music from "Field Harmonics" straight representing "WIDEFIELD!!" Colorado Springs, CO! This is just a teaser for the upcoming movie "The Epic Begins", by the Rocky Mountain Hooliganz. As viewed through the eyes of a newbie! I hope you all enjoy!! There's alot more to come!! (I apologize for the quality. When I uploaded it to Vimeo, alot of the quality was lost. It was constructed in HD with 5.1 Surround Sound) When the movie is complete you can find it at Golden River Sports with a limited amount of copies for free!! So stop in to Golden River Sports, and do some shopping. While your there, see if has hit the shelf yet!! It's Free!!!! ENJOY!!!

Cheers!!

-Nick

effects

word of advice, just because you can use a transition effect doesn't mean you should. Almost always, you shouldn't

I appreciate your thoughts and feedback!!! This is what I am looking for, "Constructive Criticism". I have only made ten videos so far, but have researched multiple videos/styles from different categories and genres. I am a newbie to the sport (video editing) so I know I need to work on some things, and work less on others! So far, I have progressed from Windows Movie Maker to a Sony platform. (movin on up in the world, HA HAA!!) I do agree with you on not using or over using transitions and effects when making "final" movies as I have discovered in some of my previous videos.

Now as far a teaser goes from my point of view for an entire movie, I would disagree (constructively disagree, not a pissing contest !!!). I believe that for the advertisement peace, it is fine using effects and transitions to create graphic animations to make certain vendors or ads pop out and grasp the viewer. This is a standard marketing strategy wouldn't you agree? I typically don't use transitions on my final film clips. I do use a fade transition or an overlap of video clips to create a soft lead into the next clip, especially if it is not shot consecutive with the previous clip.

On here, I basically took 4 video clips and 24 still shots to make the teaser (teaser is only two minutes and 17 seconds long) from four hours of video and thousands of pictures. If I didn't add any transitions or effects to the teaser, it would be pretty bland?? The teaser does not appear in the movie the same. These are random shots and clips put together, just to give people a taste of what is soon to come. The movie is more like a story with very few transitions and effects, where the teaser just shows some action clips. You'll see soon, then I hope you like it!!

I do see where you are going with the "transitions" or "over animating". It is not very tasteful! Most videos and movies don't use animated transitions, but do use a simple fade or overlap transition so that there is not a noticable transition from frame to frame when being played. It would be choppy and not a smooth glide from clip to clip without them. Most transitions you can't even notice, but they are there!!

I still appreciate you leaving your thoughts and ideas on here as a critique!! Thanks for your feedback!! I hope you enjoy the final edit!! I'll be sure to send you a copy in the mail!! I am also a moderator of a group constructing the first ever "Vimeo Filmfest" on Vimeo.com. You should join. I would love to see some of your work!! Thanks again!!!

I'm stepping of my box now!! Ha Haaa!!!

Cheers!!

-Nick

you said Sony platform, does that mean you are using Sony Vegas? If so, what version?

Vegas is easy to make movies on, but they [not yours, just in general] come out looking pretty amatuerish unless you really work with it, ie, the overabundance of special effects compared to the actual amount of footage. That being siad, Vegas can also generate some really incredible stuff as well, you just have to work at it.

Did those companies actually sponsor you/contribute to your effort? Or are they just companies you like? If its the latter- make sure those companies/sites are cool with it. Most usually are, but it's still nice to ask permission.

And lastly, what kind of movie is this? Kayaking? Skiing/riding? Climbing? I know its tough not having enough footage but unless its marketed specifically as a multi-sport movie, strictly kayakers may find themselves extremely bored watching it.

Good start though.....

Don't see too many kayak porn flicks with swims on the Chutes at Deckers I like your gogetter attitude though and the idea of an average Joe type multi-sport video.Needs more carnage

Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies! I know I need more footage and carnage! I am a newbie so that will all come with time! A newbie at videography, editing, and kayaking!! I have alot to still learn!! I'll definitely take everything to heart as far as the replies and advice goes. That's why I post on these forums, because you get an honest opinion/truth. Family and friends will never tell you the truth (at least most the time), or how it really is! It's always sugar coated!! Thanks again to all replies!!!

Ok, I can't resist calling out the real problem here. You and your bro's are going to love this video and have fun watching it for years down the line. However, if you're trying to get your average Joe off the street, or off the buzz even, into being enthused about watching your video, you're going to be sadly disappointed.

The problem? You're trying to make an extreme sports porn video using footage of 3 foot snowboard jumps, 5.10 roadside sport climbs, and class II/III whitewater. The only way anyone is going to be interested in watching that is if you modify the theme from "porn" style to some kind of documentary style or provide a narrative thread about starting out in a sport, or an outdoor lifestyle, or something to bring around some interest.

It's awesome that you've taken all the footage and are putting it together in a film, but don't expect outsiders being all pumped up about seeing it.

As far as adding special effects, I have a different take. The advice of minimizing fancy transitions and such is sound if you were attempting to make a professional style film, but if you're just doing this for fun, I think it's a great idea to experiment with all sorts of tricks. You'll learn a ton and perhaps come up with some cool ideas for later work.

I totally agree with you!! I knew what was to come on this thread, adn it was what I wanted! It is all good advice and feedback that I need to advance and get all of you to like the videos! I need to know what everyone likes and doesn't like as well as opinions! I have never done this before, I just enjoy doing it!! All I am doing is practicing for now until I do get the SICK footage that captivates everyone! In another year or two, you all with be watching some quality film hopefully. I do this as a hobby with spare money and time, so wait and see my progress as time passes!! I just started filming and editing this year!! Kayaking as well! I will continue to take a beating on the buzz and everywhere else until I get my videos and footage right!

So, thanks again for all the feedback!!

Cheers!!

And a clip of waterton at low water! If it was free I'd take a copy...

I know exactly where you are at, we did a recruitment video for the club a couple years ago and that was almost all shot on Union Chutes at really high water though like 3k, Golden WWP and the Pumphouse section of the Colorado. Worked out well since we mostly are marketing to people who've never kayaking before.
