River run park - Denver

Has anyone paddled the new waves that were created at river run park? Is it good in a kayak? All the news on it has shown river boarders on it. Also the flow page always shows the south plate at Union as NA. How do you find the flows?

I was there yesterday surfing. There were 3 kayakers and I spoke with one of them. He said its a good wave for them and that their heads were just barely able to clear the bottom. I saw them surfing both the upper and lower waves.

Gauge

I use this gauge for Union and the South Platte above Confluence Park. USGS Current Conditions for USGS 06711565 SOUTH PLATTE RIVER AT ENGLEWOOD, CO.

I think it is the USGS gauge at Union Ave.

Link above is the union gauge. The gauge posted by Matt is close but downstream and picks up bear creek. I would use this gauge for union, especially if you have the flow of your fave features dialed in. Not a whole lot of difference right now, but flows are really low. When union is "in" there can be a significant difference between the two, especially during runoff or rain events.

Right, the Union gauge is the one you want. At decent flows (>150 cfs at Union) the upper wave is fast; I haven't seen anyone stay on it in a kayak in anything other than a front surf. Lower "wave" is much more of a hole; spins and super low angle cartwheels are possible. It'll be interesting to see what they turn into with more water. More info here, aimed at surfers.
