Rio Chama: dino tracks and other places of interest

We have a Thursday (6/25) permit on the Chama. Doing a 3-day. It's gonna be sketchy thin water the first day.

Never having been on that river, we are wondering what sights and side trips are worth exploring on the way down. I have read there are petrified dinosaur tracks somewhere up some side canyon, but have never heard the name or location of it. Anyone know where exactly to look? And any other info on things to check out (taking the kids) is appreciated.

Ther is a Rio Chama Guide Book, by Stephen G. Maurer. Published by Public Lands Interpertive Assoc., Albuquerque, NM. ISBN 1-879343-24-X

I bought this guide book at the Santa Fe BLM Office ( I believe, or USFS).
Try calling: BLM Field Office, Taos, NM 505/758-8418 & ask how to get this book.

I do not read any info about dino tracks. If the water is low, pack light-some rapids will be scratchy. I've only kayaked it. It's a lovely canyon, enjoy! JT

The ranger will give you the scoop on the dino tracks, cool side hike for the kids. If you have a fax, i could send you a page from the river map with directions
