OK, from ElVado after May 1 needs a permit for the first 22 miles. Then there is the 8.8 mile second section, day use. There is a campground for registering for the day use, also camping along the 8.8 mile day use area that is paralleled by the access road. So, putin for day use is at Chavez canyon Campground or as we say ( The Monastery, because there is a monastery there too)and takeout at the Big Eddy. You could do El Vado Dam ( Coopers ranch putin) 22 miles and then start your day trips from there for the weeks ahead. If you launch at Coopers go about 2-4 miles down stream you'll see and old shack on the right real close to the river. There is a small warm spring at the edge of the cabin.Enjoy the beauty and excellent fly fishing.

N36 20.262 W106 30.808 turn off Hwy 84 to Chavez canyon

hope some of this helps

there are two sections on the Rio Chama.#1 is from ElVado dam to the Monastery (Chavez Canyon Campground) and needs a permit from May 1st on, no permit before May 1st but you still need to register at the putin ( Coopers right below El Vado Dam) the #2 section starts from where the first section stops at Chavez Canyon and goes to Big Eddy about 9 miles and parallels the road. No fees as this is a day use for running the river but there is open camping all along the 9 mile stretch right on the river or I mean above the bank. Hope this clarifies it. The water levels are usually 800 cfm on weekends and Fridays from May1st to Sept. or El Vado runs out of water HA!, right now the lake is full full full. I talked to Dave Cooper at Coopers a couple of weeks ago and he said the lake was full then. Usually they start letting out water by the end of April if the lake is full. Go and have fun.
