I'm not knocking this year's Pro-tecs as much as I'm knocking Pro-Tecs from the 90's. Back then the plastic was pretty soft, and the padding inside like spongy Styrofoam. One direct sharp rock to the head and there was very little in the design to dissipate the impact. I definitely saw stars after a hit of the Royal Gorge one time.
Not that I've looked at Pro-Tecs recently - maybe they're tons better, or maybe they're the same. The WRSI helmet was created after a kid's helmet slipped up to expose his forehead on the Payette, and he sustained an impact that killed him. If you dig through the WRSI website
