Rescue near Granite

I want to contact the kayakers who assisted a woman and 8 year old daughter to shore after they rolled their vehicle into the Arkansas River about 1 mile downstream of the confluence of Lake Creek (about mile marker 192 on Hwy 24). I would like to thank them and recognize their comendable efforts. Contact Stew or Tom at AHRA.

Hi Stew and Tom,, this Tim Koch from Leadville that was Craig Schrieber and I, we were headed back home after a great day on the Numbers. I spotted the vehicle in the river from the hwy corner a few hundred yards downstream and so we stopped. The accident must have just happened, we got another motorist to drive on and call for help then put on PFDs and scrambled down to see if there was anything we could do. Amazingly the little Girl and her Mom were nearly uninjured and justifyably freaked out by being in the river with water up to the seats of the SUV. We were able to pass them out the door and help them to the bank, up the steep 40 feet river bank they had rolled down and a group of KW construction guys got them up the last bit and started getting them both dry and warm in their vehicle. No big deal at all, we felt good at being able to help and have some PFDs and a couple of ropes to keep things safe for us. This vehicle had ran right into the end of a section of guard rail and sheared off the first five rail posts before rolling down a steep 40 feet and landing on its wheels only 5 or 6 feet from the bank. I thought it would be a great oppurtunity for all of us in the River community to remember that driving to the river and running shuttle is also a part of our lives when we need to play heads up and to focus on what we are doing!!!!

You and all those who helped did a solid job. Way to be paying attention.
On the river, I can abandon who I am and what I've done. However brief it lasts, while on the river I am nothing important and everything insignificant. I am flotsam, and happy to be so.

ChaffeeCountySAR-N swiftwater got paged, then stood down before we could get there. This proves that the first line of defense for river incidents is folks on the river--that includes running shuttle etc. Well done Tim and Craig. Wanna join SAR swift water?

Tim or Craig, Could you give me a call at AHRA 719-539-7289 X4412. I would like to set something up to recognize you in a more formal way. Perhaps a certificate of appreciation and small presentation ceremony. I'm reachable 8-5 Tuesday - Friday.

There are instances where the best possible people happen to be driving by to save someone. They can even be humble and give credit to others.
