Recent Cataract TR?

Anyone gotten off of cat recently? I'm looking for some up to date info on lake fowell levels, how many rapids are exposed and if there is current to the take out. It looks like we're going to be in the 6000 cfs range (Sunday put-in). Thanks in advance!

Take out

I think the only viable option is the weird little beach (sandy mud pit) on river right, just downstream from dirty devil, on the south side of 95. What day are you putting on?

From Colorado River - Cataract Canyon Whitewater River e-Guidebook

Take-out: Return to US 191 and drive north to I-70. Head west to Utah 24 and then go south to Hanksville. Turn left on Utah 95 and drive approx. 40 miles. Turn right between mileposts 41 and 42, just downstream from the Dirty Devil River. Hite Marina is no longer the takeout due to a receding Lake Powell.

Unless it has changed since I was last there, you need a lake elevation of just less than 3600' to run current all the way to the Dirty Devil. Right now the lake is at 3611.60' Bureau of Reclamation - Water Operations Data: Elevation, Content, Inflow & Release for last 40 Days (seriously, how do they measure it all the way to the hundredth?) so, you'll probably have a few miles of pretty slow water. My guess is that the lake starts a little below Sheep Canyon. And I think #29 is the last rapid, although it might be #30...

Careful at the takeout, I've seen a van stuck to it's differential in the sand. Pics and a TR would be much appreciated. is offline   Reply With Quote

I was playing around on AW's site and noticed the map they have posted has contour lines that extend under the lake. So, in theory if you know the elevation of the lake (3611) and find where the 3610 contour line crosses the lake, then moving water should make it to just upstream of that point. I haven't tested this theory though.

Don't remember what the lake level was, but we were there on Oct 22, about 6500 cfs, and the current pretty much disappeared after Dark Canyon
