Potential river closure on Piedra River April 15-30, 2012

The Pagosa District of the San Juan National Forest may conduct a prescribed burn in the Davis Creek area of the Piedra Area if conditions allow. The burning may take 1-2 days. If the burn occurs, the Piedra River will be closed to boating for the burn and for a period after the burn while the risk of rolling of debris and falling snags is high. If you are planning to boat the Piedra starting April 15th, you should call the Pagosa District office to ask whether the river is open (970-264-226.

Thanks for the heads up. I don't know which drainage is Davis Creek, so will the whole river be closed or just a section?

If you're able to burn the "area" shouldn't you be able to open up the lower road?

The entire river will be closed if burning occurs

The Region has imposed a burning pause that ends this week. IF conditions allow, meaning snowline on the south facing slopes are adequate, fuel moistures are within a certain range, weather forecast is favorable, any many other factors, the burn will happen. The First Fork road will mostly likely not be open. Even if it were, the entire river would still be closed during burning and for a period after. Davis Creek is above the second box/upper canyon.

I may not be able to reply to comments at this post in a timely manner. Please call the Pagosa District office if you have any questions at 970-264-2268.

Piedra Rx Burn cancelled

The Piedra burn will not be conducted this spring; therefore there is no longer any potential river closure for this reason. The First Fork Road (FDR#622) is still closed. It was plowed this week to remove persistent snowbanks and will remain closed for 1-2 more weeks to allow the road to dry out. You can call the Pagosa District office at 970-264-2268 to check on the road status.
