paddling traditions/rituals -need your input for an article

I am writing an article on paddling rituals and traditions for a national magazine and I hope you can help. I would be grateful to anyone who could share some examples that he/she has encountered on local trips, in races, or on expeditions. My deadline is this week.

The rituals/traditions can take place on any body of water, and involve any kind of paddled craft (kayaks, canoes, whitewater rafts, dragon boats, outriggers).

Nothing is too quirky or too obvious. But I would prefer to see somewhat more established traditions/rituals rather than personal ones. Please be specific and keep in mind that I have to be able to verify these. Also, if you would like to be quoted, please spell your full name.

Although I've never done it, it seems alot of people like drinking beers out of the bottie they wore down the run.

Other than that, redneck campfires and pabst?

ask permission...

Something I saw in Chile, that I now do..

Every time I get in the river, I take a mouthful of water, and splash some on my head, and then ask the river permission to go down it...

The pre-run safety meeting may be the most popular ritual.

You drink out of the bootie if you swim. Usually a beer, but subsituting liquior if beer in short supplyhas been known to occur. Yummy
Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there..... GD

I got this one from Roxane LaBelle (apparently a lot of slalom boaters used to do this): After I hop in, I always dip both hands in the water past the wrist and then splash my face three times. It helps me get used to the water temperature more quickly.

Before I run something gnarly, I usually take a piss. If it's super gnar I may piss during the run.

Ditto...only I usually shit. Sometimes in the boat. (ie don't buy a boat from me)

If possible I roll in the eddy I've put into, even if it's super cold. Thus, I get the first one out of the way and am no longer afraid to have my head in the freeze.

Occasionally I'll put my head betwixt my knees and kiss my ass goodbye. On a good day this preceeds the forementioned shit.

I try to get some tune in my head as I eddy out over a drop. Something to clear the mind before concentrating on the run. Typically something from the early 90's works well...Red Hot Chili Peppers or Alice in Chains. Saturday, I eddy out and pop-goes the weasel rings in both ears. I knew I was f'd right off.
