I hope in the future Americans are thought of as a warlike, vicious people, because I bet a lot of high schools would pick "Americans" as their mascot. -Jack Handy

Always drink at least one beer at the takeout. If the takeout vehicle is not readily available for storage of said beer, I bring it with me in my boat. (A tip for swimmers, a good trick is to slosh a shot of whiskey around in the boot to kill the fuglies before filling her up.) In that case a pint of whiskey should be considered for microbial safety purposes along with the beer but is not a tradition. This adds another incentive against swimming, I just think, if I lose my boat, I lose my beer, very effective. When boating in the middle of winter or in really cold water, I always roll as many times as it takes until the shock is over before I head down river. This is also very beneficial, (see mammalian diving reflex.)

When I first arrive at any river that I'm going to paddle, I go to the edge and dip my hands to say "hello" then I say "let's take care of each other", then splash water on my face.

When pushing off from shore I tap my helmet three times with my right hand. Don't ask me why but I do, everytime.

I keep a bottle of whiskey in the back of my truck – when the dry top is on I take a big swig - fill the mouth gargle and drink her down. Wakes you up more than a red bull!

If I am runnin lake I also drink one beer on the way to the put in. Then 110 every time and off we go.

Usually before I head on a commercial, no matter what the temp of the water, I alway submerge myself under the water and then wait for my balls to roll into my stomach. I guess it is a pre-emtive shock all over so I don't have to deal with it while I am concentrating on the river. For non comercial trips I usually sober up from the night before by eating a huge ass breakfast, drinking coffe and then dumping it out before even leaving the cafe. Post drinking a nalgene of water I then drink a beer or two durning rigging.

you have to drink any beer that you find floating in an eddy. the river gods take refusal of their offering as an insult and you will pay for it later.

i also know and still try to adhere to the never load a boat backward (Dancer days) ritual. the theory is that the boat gets used to moving that direction and you'll end up running drops that way
