Paddling in Bend, Oregon

Looking at a job in Bend, Oregon and thinking of moving. Does anybody have beta on the paddling in the area? I know the Deschutes is close or in town or something, what section is in town? How does the boating compare to Durango, quality runs, year round paddling? Any info on weather, community, skiing (bachleor? how far?), backcountry, ocean and of course access from front range doosh bags (Portland)? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Go to boatertalk and do a search on oregon, or bend. Lots of discusions about paddling in the various locations in the Pac NW. Got most of what I wanted just by looking at the old posts.

I lived in Bend for a couple summers. Your main option there is the Deschutes. The deschutes is a weird river. Lots of flatwater and some big drops. Near bend you have: first street- crappy playspot, big eddy- short 3+, meadow camp- great 4+, lava island- 5, dillon falls- 5, and benham falls- 5++. That stuff runs all summer and most of the year. Also there is some class IV below town that runs before and after irrigation season. Other than that, there is some illegal irrigation canal boating, including one really good playspot-area 51. You are 2-3 hours from all the stuff on the other side of the mountains.

Surfgod, I wouldn't call anyone a "doosh" bag unless you can properly spell douche. Please don't bring front range biases to Oregon, "brah". There's plenty of water for all of us up here.
