origins of south boulder creeks' water

where does the water on upper south boulder creek come from? grand lake? and is there a guage that measures this outflow? lastly, what is the water's final destination? either irrigation or drinking i assume.

The moffat tunnel brings water over from the winterpark area. The williams fork maybe? Denver water owns Gross res where most of it is stored. They use it to keep their lawns green.

Yup, the water goes through Moffat Tunnel. Denver Water owns all of the water rights in the winter park/Fraser area and sends it through Moffat Tunnel. The Williams Fork reservoir may be replacement water to keep the water flowing in late summer that Moffat Tunnel sends east.

I'm not sure all of the water is used for urban use. There are also some big agricultural ditches that are fed from south boulder creek, but I don't expect Denver Water is involved with that.

The Alva B. Adams tunnel goes from Grand Lake to Estes Park and that water heads to various locations after that. I think it mostly goes down the Big Thompsom but gets redirected at several points for irrigation and probably some drinking water. Granby reservoir holds water that is pumped back up to Grand Lake so that it can be pumped out all summer long and keep the northern front range watered down.

Williams Fork is for replacement water that Denver pulls out of the Colorado River drainage. They also have the new Wolford Mountain reservoir outside of Kremling to replace water as well.

As for a guage out of the Moffat tunnel, click on this link

Water from the West side of RMNP also gets piped down the Big T and over to Horsetooth Reservoir which supplies drinking water to Ft. Collins and irrigation water to Larimer and Weld counties. This is all part of the Colorado Big Thompson Project. Do a search on this and you will see how the plumbing works.

The water through the Alva B. Adams tunnel from Grand Lake to Estes Park is nearly all agricultural. And it's a lot of water--generally about 1000 cfs.

80-90% of all water diverted from west slope to east slope is agricultural. Blame the east slope farmers, not the city.

Upper Williams Fork gets diverted into W. fK .Clear Crk.*isn't the Fraser drainage in between W. fk and Moffat ,I guess they shuffle the hell outta that water.I've pushed the wrong button on Watertalk a few times that Adams Tunnel always seems to have a lot of water wondered where it went, where ever it's from it's frigid as hell.

*Ernst P. Gumlik tunnel or sumpin' like that
