"Optimum" Weight

As a paddler I have seem many schools of thought when it comes to sizing a boat. I seem to have narrow it down to three main ideas.

1. Go with the kayak manufacturer's weight suggestion.

2. If you are a big guy, buy big even if you aren't aren't suggested weight range.

3. If you go big, buy big (creek). If you throw big, by small (play).

I have always found myself sticking with the manufacturer suggestion by placing myself in the middle of the suggest range. How do you size your boats?

That is similar logic to what i offer to people when they ask for boat sizing advice. There is no harm in getting a boat that is a little too big for you, it just means yiu float higher and might have to work a little harder for somethings than others. I unfortunately fall into the lanky and light category for boat sizing. Weight wise I can easily paddle the mid-size boats in almost every category, but based on my height and the size of my feet I end up in the large versions. The only boat that has truly fit well weight wise was the Pyranha Rev M-Long.
