As far as a benefit or not, I would imagine that the overall snow pack and spring temps outweighs the variances caused by beetle kill. Plus, before the CCC came along and planted all of these trees we use to be much more barren. Our forestry efforts may be the ultimate trigger since we pretty much offered up a smorgasbord for the likes of John, Paul, George, and Ringo.
I take issue with the extreme language: "As the spring runoff leaves behind a trail of destruction
in parts of the the northern Rockies" It's not like the deep canyons and erosion evidence doesn't scream: water will come here in a predictable manner so you'd be best not to put up a multi-million dollar hotel/shopping mall. The first line of the article wants to blame the destruction of human developments on the pine beetle rather than human stupidity.... I think I drank too much coffee this morning... I'm feeling pissy.
