Not sure about Whitesell, but I do know that Risa went in there in a 3/4"-cut New Wave Jet.
Back to Spe. When he came to Tulsa for one of our rodeos back in the day, I asked him about Niagara. In effect, he said rapids like Granite and Hermit were "pre-school" compared to the Himalayas. I also remember him mentioning that on one of his Niagara runs when he went by Whirlpool, he saw a big 30'-ish telephone pole go in there and disappear .
Anyone know where in the gorge that the discharge from the power generation occurs? I think the Gorge itself gets the full flow of the river(around 250K CFS?), but the Falls don't. I saw on some PBS show a few months back that there are proponents for having a "Falls Day," where they would suspend power generation for a day and let the full flow go over the falls just for the spectacle and awe. Opponents fear it will cause too much erosion.
BTW, that was a great write-up by Weeden on Spe's web site.
