Non-whitewater canoeing/oxbows

I am looking for some calm water stretches where I can float a canoe for a few hours. I know the Arkansas pretty well from Canon to B.V., but not from Canon to Pueblo. I have seen some calm water between Fairplay and Hartsel, but I am not sure if it is public. Looking for some input on location, obstacles, access etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Falcon guidebook Paddling Colorado by Dunbar Hardy focuses on the easier runs and is a good resource for beginners and canoeists. It lists a 10-mile flatwater run called Swallow Canyon, from the Hwy 120 bridge in Portland to the Northshore Marina on the Pueblo Reservoir. "This is a great open canoe section where easy, gentle water greets paddlers along with a tranquil setting."

Earl Perry's book Rivers of Colorado; Ten Easy Trips is a good book which I believe includes the section from Canon City to Pueblo Reservoir (lots of sweepers in there). It's out of print but you could find a used copy.

just got back from the green. there's a solid ~120 miles of flatwater, Labrynith is a free permit you can get on the spot, theres your first ~68 miles right there.

I dig all the help. Excited to see a different view than single track all day.
