Newbie spots near Ft Collins?

Hey, where are some good places around Fort Collins for newbies to practice rolls and stuff now that the pool sessions are over (preferably flat water sites)?

There really are not any good places.
Horsetooth Reservior, but a kayak is the same as a motor boat and they charge you accordingly
McMurray Pond north of town - but I got sick there the last time I went in the pond a few years ago.
There are some ponds to the east of town that are OK, not good, just OK. Go down Prospect, east of Timberline heading towards I25, make a right and go towards the jail. There is a parking lot on your left next to the Ponds.

Picnic rock is a REALLY good place to learn. about 200 feet up from the parking lot there are two huge eddies and a not so swift current to practice rolls, eddy turns, peel outs, and ferrying. Picnic rock is that first parking lot as you get into the canyon.

If you don't want to drive up the canyon check out McMurry pond. Its a little north of old town, a few of blocks west of college. I think its at the end of hemlock st. Its warm early in the season but by mid summer it is filled with lilly pads.
