Just replying to cdw, the honeymoon couple. Central North Island is some what tropical compared to the south, so rafting and kayaking operaters are open all year round in this area. check out, rafting and sledging company in Rotorua. If your partner is not up to kayaking these rivers, then i highly recomend she takes the sledge option with Kaitiaki, she will absolutely love it. Also my partner owns the company so i can vouch for their professionalism. There could be a surprise by June, a section of river most beautiful and untapped at present, Kaitiaki may be operating this section by then, if so, wow!!!!!! Also Sunspots Kayaks are open, Donald Calder makes a brilliant kayak guide.

Australia, worked up in Cairns in my early rafting days, all good too, its just not New Zealand, hard to compare. Id love to take you both kayaking, but june july ill be in your part of the world.

sweet, hope that helps

Does anyone know about water levels on the South Island right now? Frenchy and I are going to Nelson in a couple of weeks and hope to paddle around Murchison and Buller. I did find a flows page, but don't really know what to compare it to. All the rivers in that area are rain-fed, correct?

Also, do you think we should try to reserve boats now? I have no idea what to expect in terms of rentals. I'll post something on the local forum as well, but thought I'd ask here first...

Going boating in NZ in January and Febuary

I am headed to South Island for about a month. I am trying to decide whether to fly with my boat. I have a ticket out of LAX with air new zealand but I haven't bought a ticket to LAX from Atlanta because I don't know what airlines are kayak friendly. I am also wondering if it would less of a hassle to buy a boat over there and sell it when I leave. Any suggestions?
