I knew paddlers who started in their later years. Age is no barrier. Just go for it!
Paddling alone is no fun and can be dangerous. And it has been - at least for me - the camaraderie and connections that kept me in the sport. I am shy and quiet typically but connect easily on and off river with paddlers.
There are several clubs in the south. Consider joining one. The Tennessee Canoe Club is one club. You can check that out at TENNESSEE VALLEY CANOE CLUB
They typically offer instructional programs too.
Sometimes stores such as REI offer intro programs or demo days. That is a good way to test gear and meet folks.
Another idea is to pay for an instructional program in the area; you'll meet potential paddling partners that way too.
