5 essentials:

Throw rope is good once you have practiced with it a few times. Cold water/weather protection can be import depending on locale and time of year. Dry top should get you by in PA for much of the year.

Ohiopyle is the spot to learn. Class II and III options with shops and a bit of a community. Ask around there should be some used boats down that way.

I got you. what you want is a river runner or creeker, for the type of boating you want to do that's the best way to go. easy to roll, and plenty of volume. for now I would steer away from playboats and fun runners. anybody that teaches will put you in a river runner at first anyway. dagger nomad or mamba- wavesport recon or diesel-piranha burn or shiva- Jackson hero or karma- etc. there a nice classifieds on here as well and it separates the different types for you. shop carefully for your pfd, your a big guy so make sure you get enough flotation. as far as skirts go make sure to try it on before you buy it. same thing with a dry top. a beginner class is highly recommended, it will save you a ton of trial and error nonsense.
