"Only two things come from Texas, boy: steers and queers! And you don't look like no steer to me!"

I think your being too soft. Corporal punishment is the only way to get teenagers to learn to roll.

Newbie...some fine day you'll get over that boy from algebra...

I hope in the future Americans are thought of as a warlike, vicious people, because I bet a lot of high schools would pick "Americans" as their mascot. -Jack Handy

I teach kayaking as well, and I've found that you just have to to be carefull who (or who's mother) you say things like that to. I'm guessing that some of your students would have been fine with it.

I wouldn't over analyze what you said, but I think I would try to focus on the positive of good technique. Instead of sayig you will die, say if you learn this you can huck really big waterfalls, and if you don't you can't (or whatever motivates them to kayak).

In 93' (when rolling instruction was primitive) my dad was trying to get me to keep my head down, and phrased it as slapping my head on my shoulder. That soon became, "slap your head down or I'll slap it for you." You should have seen the improvements over the next few roll sessions. I was 11. My dad is the shit.

Thanks guys.

We usually have lots of fun with the paddle club. The school supports us and the kids turn out to be great paddlers. I will lighten up a bit...

I took a kayaking class last spring and one of the instructors was a wannabe drill instructor. He kept yelling things like "ROLL, ROLL, ROLL!" and "KNEE, KNEE, KNEE - USE YOUR KNEE!". It wasn't encouraging at all, not to mention very obnoxious. It made a lot of the students not want to work with him.

If I knew he was going to be an instructor for a future class, I'd probably just skip it, or take a class somewhere else.
