Need some patching advice...

A nail went straight through my boat right where a seam meets the boat fabric. I'm wondering if I should patch this any differently than a normal patch to guarantee a good seal, since it will be along the ridge of the seam. A double patch maybe? Any advice would be a huge help.

What kind of raft? Got pics? How big's the hole?

You can try patching it as normal, which is probably the easiest, but you may find that you're having trouble sealing the patch along that seam.

Depending on where exactly it sits and what kind of seams, you might be able to make a small cut away from the seam, patch inside, and out over the nail hole, and then patch the operating incision.

Personally, though, I would lean more toward using some urethane over the hole if it's small enough, and then sticking a patch on top of that.

I just got done repatching along about ten minutes ago. My first patch had a slight leak along the seam line and I had to remove the patch and start over. If you have never had to remove a patch it is a frustrating and enlightening experience at the same time. You can see very clearly how the patch adhered to the raft and where the strengths and weaknesses are.

Applying the patch a second time around, I did try something new. I took a razor blade and slightly cut down (angled cut) the raised seam edge to more closely match the height of the lower piece of material. I could tell straight away in the mock-up, the patch was much closer and I'm significantly more confident this patch will not leak because of the closer tolerances.

That all being said, I really won’t know until tomorrow evening when it gets inflated…
