Sure, as I said the upper Skagit is mainly a class II. It is a big river, lots of water so it's not too hard to go around anything on the river edge (ie trees). It moves pretty fast year round and it's pretty deep in places. As w/ nearly all rivers around here it's pool drop so if you do fall out, it's not a long swim until calmer waters. As far as which type of Kayak- I have no idea as I've only had limited experience with them. Good luck.
Look up the Skagit. It might be a fun intro trip for you. Just be sure to bring warm clothes for afterwards. That river is damn cold! lol
