we were in the bozeman and missoula areas week before last. saw a couple of guys on the gallatin near the lava lake trailhead area. it looked low but doable if you chose your lines decent enough. above and below there it widened out quite a bit. the raft companies were still running trips, so a hard boat should be able to make it.

Quake lake stretch of the Madison is a little over 1 mile of continous 4 to 5 depending on levels. There's water there year round and its road side so you can do laps. Beartrap canyon on the madison near Ennis is like 12miles with a couple of 3s one 4 and a bit of flatwater. It's a roadless wilderness area, great scenery and fishing.

Bear Trap Canyon - Montana

We're planning on running Bear Trap Canyon for the first time over Labor Day weekend. Does anybody know if there are usually other kayakers around? We'll only have one car so we'll need to share a shuttle....

Its Lower Mesa not upper. It's a double-tiered 15 footer to 30 footer. Quake Lake and Beartrap are both quality

You used to be able to hire a shuttle at Norris Hot Springs in Norris. That was when Dorris the B----- owned it. Don't know now. You would be very lucky to find kayakers at the takeout to run shuttle with. The shuttle is a bit long, too. Recommend the Hot springs when you're done.

Quake is just up the road and the shuttle is easy to run/hitch.

The Gallatin is runnable pretty much year round, but I can't hardly be talked into driving from Bozeman for it. Same with the Yellowstone (Gardiner stretch and Yankee Jim).

If I was to drive somewhere this way to boat it would be Kootenai area or Idaho (Payettes).

Good luck.
