Mission Impossible: Grand Canyon

I'm looking forward to a comfortable stretch of unemployment, and have heard there are ways to get on the Grand without having a permit or knowing a permit holder.
The best, and only legal way, I'm told, is to show up at the put-in and wait (sometimes a week or more) until a group shows up with an extra slot or two. Anyone have experience with this?

Not first hand but a friend of mine camped out at the put in and hitched a ride with in 5 days and he didn't have to take the first person that came along.
Goos luck
