Like I said, it cleans up. I never said it got easier. I have seen people take beatings in there at many levels.

Ps. I too have got stuck in that seam at trash can. I almost boofed onto toms head and proceeded to almost swim. It is not a friendly place to be.

Enjoy your run. It is one of the best in the state.

I'll echo what's largely been said. Especially at higher levels, be on your toes in the in-between stuff. I took a swim this year after getting complacent and getting pushed in between a boil and a pourover that was feeding it. Not fun.

That pipe/death crevase is exactly why I don't run Deer over 600. The thought of just the slightest thing going wrong and ending up in that thing is not even slightly worth it to me.

I have never heard of a single person in there, but would love to hear if indeed it's happened.

Anyone know?

Even if the answer is no... I can't say that I would still ever go for it.

Hey Dan,
That is the hole I swam out of but I managed to get out on the right above the slide. For a relatively short swim, it was brutal in terms of rock impacts. I ended up seeing a doctor for one of the hits that I took to the crotch. It was kind of like having someone throw a rock the size of a pumpkin at your balls.

I got lucky and found a slightly submerged rock in the middle of the rapid. I held onto it for a few seconds until I realized I was getting too tired to hold on and my only chance was to go for the right bank immediately. I BARELY BARELY made it to the big rock on the right above the slide. If I had missed it I was thinking broken femur because there is no way to stop once you go over that slide and you might just get slammed hard on the slide or the last drop. They both have nasty landings for swimmers.

The other comments about the death trap on the left side of Deer Creek rapid are right on. I think that rapid is solid class V with water in it.

I had a time where I thought I might go the pipe slot line last year. I think the flow was only around 400 and I had been running many times higher. In fact, I believe I was driving harder than necessary at the lower water level and that's what caused it.

Anyway, my nose ended up spinning out left right at the lip of the first slide and in an moment of uncertainty I grabbed the rock that separates the good channel from the pipe channel with my right hand and sat for a second teeter tottering contemplating life. Both lines flashed in my head and I was about to go for the backwards mainline run, but looked upstream and saw an eddy I thought I could attain to. I pushed off the rock hard with my hand and paddled back up and found safety in the eddy. I actually just recently saw someone pull a similar line, but pulled out the full 360 in time and ran the slide straight.

It's a funny rapid because it generally boats smooth, but I've heard of a number serious injuries there when things have gone wrong.

In my many trips, I have never seen anyone go near the death crevass. Especially at higher flows, the water pushes away from it pretty strongly. I think the only way someone would go in there is if they were swimming for the left shore and did not make it.

I my experience, people get messed up in that rapid when they to sneak the entrace left. If you just run center, there is a good boof and the hole never really gets sticky. One of those sneaks that isn't really a sneak.
