Might have saved our lives...........
So no sh!t there we were. My buddy Mick and I were just finishing the Upper Eben G. Fine Park drops. All were pretty beefy at 800 cfs at noon today. Sticky and meaty. We were just recuperating above the 2nd footbridge when a lady came over telling us to get out now because there was a large tree across the river just below.
Frankly, we were inclined to disbelieve her and shrug it off as just a hysterical know- nothing hiker but we decided to take a look anyhow. We walked downstream on the bike path and saw a tree that crossed low over the left side and we then decided that she did not have any idea how easy it was to avoid such an obvious obstacle.
So we walked back up to the boats and were preparing to relaunch when she came up to us again. This time she explained that her husband had designed the river anf then the bells started going off.
It was Leslie Lacy and her husband Gary is who noticed this river wide strainer just at the surf wave right behind their house. They alerted the Boulder authorities immediately and the Leslie rode up tothe bridge where we met her.
Convinced now, we walked farther down stream and finally discovered caution tape stretched across the bike path. We ducked it and continued down to where a large tree/branch was spanning the entire river with large thick branches extending below and above the surface.
About 10 yards further down we finally met the authorities. Firemen with throw bags below the strainer but no one above. We pointed out that someone above the problem could alert boaters before the obstacle and prevent the body retrieval operation below.
We continued downstream and things remained fast and a little bit rowdy but there was no more wood in the river. We ran into Toni and Dave Frank just below the Broadway Street bridge. They had launched at 6th and missed the tree entirely.
You all know how often Dave is on Mountainbuzz. So,in no time at all,he has linked up via his phone and spread the word. Awesome response all around!
After we finished the run we drove back up to the top and walked down to the tree. Boulder had a semi-tow truck backed into the river with another tow truck hooked to the first to keep it from being pulled in or pulled over by the force. I told you it was a big tree.
Anyway, I wanted to give credit where credit is due. The actions of all those involved was amazing. The way our community was alert and quick in its response not just locally on the river but via phone to the Boulder authorities and then via internet to all Buzzards.
Got to tell you.... we were both gratefull and proud.
Thanks everybody and remember to be safe out there.
