I would recommend running the Main Salmon first - it is easier and more forgiving.
Thanks for all of the replies and I appreciate the time you took to respond. I am also reading the threads pulled from the search. I don't want to go and screw up or put anyone in danger, including my sorry wet ass. Thanks for the perspective.

The Main Salmon is a great training ground for the Middle Fork, and a really awesome river trip in it's own right. It has always been one of my favorites. Main Salmon permits are much easier to get than the Middle Fork. Main Salmon cancellations are readily available if you're a little flexible on launch dates. Prime time Middle Fork permits are kind of like the "Holy Grail" of river running

RAFTUS has many excelent points. Start on the Main, but even with experienced folk, things go wrong. About 10 yrs ago one of our rafts wrapped and it took 5 hrs and 2 Z-drags to get off. Thank goodness we were-are experienced boaters and everyone had rescue training and each boat had a Z kit, and an extra 75 ft of rope along. Thus was an Aug trip, and only one other group passed us the entire time

Few years later on the MF, we ran into a small group- 1 raft and 3 IK's. They had broken two of their oars on day one, and everything was duck-tapped together with branch splints! This was an Aug trip, they had flown into Indian Creek, so probably @ 1.8 ft. They finished the trip fine, but something went wrong on day one.
