Middle fork Salmon
Our launch date was 7-7-11. The gauge at middle fork lodge was 4.98. The first day we averaged 8 mph, Things were fast and furious but a ton of fun. Velvet comes up on you so fast you best be ready and paying a lot of attention or it will sneak up on you. It snuck up on me, ran it dead center before I knew where I was. The 14' cat went into reverse and backed into the curl but I was lucky and was ejected upright on the first cycle. Pistol was big and fast but could run entering on right so it was fairly easy. When we got to the lower canyon the feeders below Middle fork lodge were dumping. I have been down this river seven time and I don't think the water gauge at the middle fork lodge gave the lower section justice for the actual level of the lower river. The holes were huge and the standing waves in rubber and porcupine were very large. Our group had one boat flip in rubber, although it was the boatman with the least amount of experience. He is more experienced now. It was a great trip and some big water, glad to have done it but I prefer a level of around 3'.
Wish I was launching again tomorrow. Tim
