May boating questions....

I'm temporarily in Carefree, Arizona and have the Month of May to boat anywhere in Colorado. Is this too early for the melt? And if not, where should I focus my efforts. I'm a competent Class V boater but will be with some new boaters, so I'd like to be able to balance some fun II/III stuff with some IV/V stuff. I'd like to get on some good creeks, but obviously can't with the people I'm with. I'm not sure what it's like in Colorado, but I know that on the popular Class IV/V stuff in WV and NC (say Upper Yough, Big Sandy, Wautauga) people will let you join their group if it seems like you know what you're doing. Thanks for any and all help.

The stuff around Taos, NM should be HUGE in May, I think.
Lower Taos Box should be 3-plusish, but really really big if the peak comes in May. And there's some easier stuff just downstream. And the Upper Box as well as several nearby creeks will provide your class 5 fix.

In Colorado, the Arkansas will be great in May - regardless of when the peak comes, there will be everything from class 2 to class 5 available between Canon City and Leadville on the Ark every day in May.

Roll in to Salida or Buena Vista and you'll have NO PROBLEM finding folks to paddle with. Just go to CKS (Colorado Kayak Supply). I'm not sure about the paddle community in NM, having only been there a couple times.

Post on here right before you come, and lots of folks will offer to show you the runs in Colorado.
