Lower Clear Creek: Big Boofs and Bears

Lower Clear creek was a blast last night. Most of the big ass rocks are covered and that means HUGE boofs! Blue Angel launching off of big ass rocks that are perfectly covered with water right now brought universal ear to ear grins. Surf waves are everywhere. Its a hole punching, wave train bouncing, rock boofin good time. Suprisingly few people out there last night.

At the takeout we saw a bear cruising through the park next to the playpark. Before we could slip some cold cuts in our buddies PFD and send him over to take a picture, he was off into the neighborhood. Cool wildlife sighting to finish off a great run.

The golden rescue boys had the boogie boards and the zodiac inflatable below tunnel one. I bet you could boof the shit out of a zodiac in there right now.

playboat or creekboat worthy at the current level? never done it, and am thinking about heading down this weekend.

Sounds very fun.

I love Clear Creek. It is why I moved to Golden. At this level the lower run is all fun for people comfortable in class IV. Upper is really good now too. The section behind tunnel 6 gets beefy above 1000 and there are a few holes in there that you have to let your probe find for you while you read and run. Make the playboater go first and watch for cartwheels and then go around them...that is what I do. Black Rock is good too but for me it becomes not so fun at this level and it gives me a stomach ache at the putin. Memories of past swims. I like that Black Rock adrenaline too, but not every day.

Everyone I saw out there last night was in creekboats, but it could certainly be done in a playboat, just depends who you are. There were some spots where I wish I was in my playboat. It did not get as difficult at this level as I was expecting it might, but it's bigger.

Ahhhh... thats the question, playboat or creeker? Been asking myself that too.

Its good practice for the creeker, but its got lots of good surf waves.

Saw a couple of guys late last week in playboats and they had a good time. If you run beefy class IV in a playboat, then bring it. It certainly can be done. It does get juicy in a few spots though.

I like the creeker as its what I've been spending most of my time in and its a great run to practice boof timing, hole punching, ferries and eddy catching. So many different moves you can make.

Most of the run is fun in a creekboat, but has you wishing for your playboat. There are just enough spots that get a bit juicy at this level that has me thankful I'm in my creekboat though.

As a comparison I run low water numbers in a playboat, but bring the creeker when it starts getting big. Lower clear creek is the same thing for me. Playboat low, creek when its big.

If you playboat the numbers high, then bring it here too.

I ran this section at 450 in my playboat a couple years ago. I'm coming over this week...I'll probably run my creekboat, but was wondering how much harder it will be. Is the play park better at the current flows?

I play boated it yeasterday as did the other 3 folks I saw on the river- good wave-wheels, elbow flushes and 1/4 mi has an easier boof on the L. The play-park was fun, I'd just call it different from lower flows.
Anyone want to get out tonight?
