Because I wade fish in the canyon a bunch, I see lotsa boats/kayaks go through at lotsa flows. I'm the guy who cracks bad jokes as you pass by.
I've seen 4 boats going down through the canyon this year at 300 cfs. Yep, 300. I didn't notice the boat sizes, so don't know if 16'ers were used. Guess they made it down ok but, man, you better be good on the sticks to do it at that level through the rocks... I've also watched boats going through the rock garden directly below the big hole which is just down from the big bend at around 400 and can tell you that it was a mighty tight deal when they went through them river left to river right to stay in the main current. I've also seen a few hung up for a while on them.
I've also witnessed a boat tear up its rear chambers on the first rock garden's top river right rock just down from the parking lot at 500 cfs because of an inexperienced oarsman. Had they not made it over to the river left parking lot side, they and their boat probably would have been over on the cliff side for a long while. They weren't happy boaters after that and had to carry their boat/frame/oars/etc back up instead of having a good day on the water.
