Looking for a playboat in Maui

Need some help. I'm going to Maui on vacation. I want to do a little surfing, only in my playboat. Does anyone know of a place to rent one on Maui or should I ship mine out from CO. Any help would be great.

You won't find a river boat, and the decked surf kayaks are nearly impossible to find for a rental. Most places focus on touring, but if you ask around a little bit, you can find a sit on top boat designed for surfing like a Cobra Strike. These are really fun! They rent for about $30-40 per day and $150-200 per week for you to compare with the cost of shipping yours out and back.

Watch out for those board surfers and have fun!

I went to Maui in March and toyed with hitting some kayak surfing. Unless you ship it (read arm and a leg!) you most likely won't find a kayak there. The only kayak shop that I dug up on the internet was in Oahu.

With that said, there are so many incredible things to do in Maui, that I decided to skip the kayaking (which I can do anytime in CO) and do the things that you can only do in Maui. I would highly recommend the Maui revealed guide book for adventures. We snorkeled off lava fields in a place called the aquarium (highly recommend), did some diving which was super cool, went whale watching, which is probably not happening anymore, and did a bunch of cool hikes and chilling at the beach. There are some full on Indiana Jones waterfall hikes to do there. You can also board surf or boogie board if the water is good. In my mind, the kayak thing is just too much of a pain in the ass to try to make happen in Maui and in the end your time might be better spent on other things.

If you want more info you could also search boatertalk. I did a search on hawaii and Maui and there has been a lot of discussion and there were some folks from hawaii who frequent BT.

have a great time!

I agree with deepsouth. I would add that a guy named Kelie a local boy had a sit on top kayak company. He showed us some really cool stuff. I realize this may not be what you're after but it was really cool. sj

Rent a board and go to Honolua Bay, you'll have much more fun than farting around in a playboat

Surfing a seakayak in swells can be a hell of a lot of fun too. You've never gone that fast in a kayak. And if not surfing, just paddling and seeing some cool stuff is great.

I just got back from Maui last week. What a sick island. The swells weren't going off, but the wind was. If you like adrenaline in your kayak give kiteboarding a shot. Lessons aren't cheap but probably the only way to learn and it's a blast. Maui's the place to learn. The 'aquarium' was sweet as was Honulua bay -- lot's of turtles to swim with. Go to La Perouse bay for dolphins if any are around. Have fun.
