Learned a lesson about hydration and kayaking this saturday

I figure its a good idea to share the times we demonstrate poor judegement, and for me it was this saturday on the North St. Vrain. I'll keep it short.

1) I drove up to lyons friday, had a good lap on the SSV besides an arm shot at jihad. Planned to race but the top section looked terrible for my non-sponsored / non-health insured self.

2) Drove back to Denver, drinks with friends/late night out, then woke up early sat. morning. Back to Lyons, watched the race, and then jumped on with a crew at the proving grounds put in... never taking the time to eat anyting or grab a bottle of water for the run. (coming from Georgia, I thought nowhere in the mountains in CO could be that hot..)

3) Dry top + neoprene, by the time we got to the first big rapid I was having mussle contractions in my feet and arms.. the shot I took at jihad seemed to feel 10x worse than it did before putting on and my energy level plummeted. I just wanted off the river ( I cant remember the last time I had that thought).

Moral? Don't cut corners and always be prepared. I felt solid before gearing up. Had this been a less forgiving/longer/less accesible run I would have been in trouble!

Good advice and thanks for the reminder. Dehydration will kick you in the ass and twice on Sundays. I always carry several bottles of water in my car, an extra bottle of water in my boat, and a couple of power bars in my small drybag just in case.

The higher you get in elevation will also dehydrate you. I always carry a nalgene bottle of water for every one on my boat, more if they are from Denver or lower. Water and some sort of snacks, p.b. and crackers, power bar, or similar food should always be part of your safety gear. Thanks for the good reminder.

If you need something quick to rehydrate- Coconut water is a miracle in a bottle. Works better than any other "sports drink". I've been to the point of near hospitalization with dehydration and a bottle of the stuff made me feel human again. I now always bring a bottle as backup on every trip in addition to plain water.

I had my first kayak swim in 12 years yesterday on the Lochsa. Combination of mild dehydration and not enough breakfast. I had a few pancakes with syrup, but no eggs/bacon/meat/beans/cheese/protein. Crew was late getting on the river, and my blood sugar was already low getting on the water.

I felt like the Betty White character in the Snickers commercial.

Midway down the river we stopped, and I bummed an almond/cranberry granola bar and a double handful of peanut butter pretzels. The rest of the river was great.

Mom was right. Eat a big breakfast.
