Last Day at Parkdale, 8/17/09

Took a last day down on the Ark yesterday. Solo'd Pinnacle to Parkdale, got on the water at about half past 2, didn't see a single other boat for the trip. The weather was fantastic, hitched the shuttle (shout out to the guys driving their work rigs yesterday!). Water was at a really fun level for playing with the raft, ~750 for the run on the Parkdale gage. Got to enjoy lots of scooting around using eddies, doing slalom through the rock gardens and just having a really fun time.

Parked in a great raft-surf spot where I could've stayed all night if I'd wanted to. Had a great time doing 360s without putting an oar into the water, side surfing, getting the complete boat wash with water pouring over the tube. Easy front & back surfing across the hole with minimal work and when I did want a break, just shipped the oars and hung out. As I was pulling out, even managed to get eddy service back into the hole from river R. I'd have stayed longer but the Fremont county sheriff came by and threatened a loitering charge if I didn't move on.

The all-day raft surfing hole's about a couple of miles above Parkdale, on River L there's a rounded rock in the river sticking up a couple of ft, then a pointed rock sticking out a couple of feet about 50 yds below, then the hole. Its about a quarter mile above the last real rapid with a good drop, and just a little further above the long concrete things on River L holding up the bank (like at Staircase on Brown's). This hole is not visible from the highway except from a short spot about 400 yds upstream.

Got to Parkdale about 7 pm when the sun was just dropping behind the ridge. The place was deserted except for a couple of fishermen.

Great day to wrap up the Ark raft season.

It was a beautiful day there yesterday. We were a few hours ahead of you. Nice play level to the end of a great boating season on the Ark.

I'd have to say it was one hell of a weekend on the Ark as well. Took the little wifey and we did a super chill, relaxed, quiet, Brown's canyon over-nighter. Put in mid afternoon in Johnson's village and by the time we got to fishermans it was all but empty....floated on down to a sweet little campsite and felt like we had the canyon to ourselves. Oh, except the meat-head that floated by and made fun of our dogs (cause they're little).

Anyway, yesterday was fun as hell too.....a few commercials coming through....but all in all it was quiet. Beautiful weather, fun tight little lines.....very nice.

Although, I can't say Ark season is over for me yet.....I may have a gorge run left.
