Took a last day down on the Ark yesterday. Solo'd Pinnacle to Parkdale, got on the water at about half past 2, didn't see a single other boat for the trip. The weather was fantastic, hitched the shuttle (shout out to the guys driving their work rigs yesterday!). Water was at a really fun level for playing with the raft, ~750 for the run on the Parkdale gage. Got to enjoy lots of scooting around using eddies, doing slalom through the rock gardens and just having a really fun time.
Parked in a great raft-surf spot where I could've stayed all night if I'd wanted to. Had a great time doing 360s without putting an oar into the water, side surfing, getting the complete boat wash with water pouring over the tube. Easy front & back surfing across the hole with minimal work and when I did want a break, just shipped the oars and hung out. As I was pulling out, even managed to get eddy service back into the hole from river R. I'd have stayed longer but the Fremont county sheriff came by and threatened a loitering charge if I didn't move on.
The all-day raft surfing hole's about a couple of miles above Parkdale, on River L there's a rounded rock in the river sticking up a couple of ft, then a pointed rock sticking out a couple of feet about 50 yds below, then the hole. Its about a quarter mile above the last real rapid with a good drop, and just a little further above the long concrete things on River L holding up the bank (like at Staircase on Brown's). This hole is not visible from the highway except from a short spot about 400 yds upstream.
Got to Parkdale about 7 pm when the sun was just dropping behind the ridge. The place was deserted except for a couple of fishermen.
Great day to wrap up the Ark raft season.
