The time you'll spend between launching and getting to Split Mountain is best time of all.Personally, I'm inclined to spring and fall for floats out in the desert.Enjoy! -AH

Is a great western river multiday trip.

The Lodore section before it meets up with Yampa, is really fun rapids manageable but lots of moves.

Below the Lodore Yampa confluence, a bit of flat water. Then Split Mountain has big wave actions, more fun.

good thing with Lodore is you get the creek type moves there and the big water moves at Split mountain.

Lodore is one of my all-time favorites. Stunning canyon, lots of wildlife, and a fun run. I've done it at varying levels, mostly around 1000 cfs. It gets pretty rocky at lower levels. The rapids are a little technical in oar rigs under 1000, but still fun for duckies and kayaks. Definitely pick up a copy of Rivermaps Dinosaur National Monument. Rainbow Park can sometimes seem like a never-ending lake, but Split Mountain makes Rainbow worth it. Definitely do the hike above Jones Hole. River Runners shuttle service is a great investment.

I did a late September run, never saw a ranger at the put-in or another person until Echo Park.

Anytime you can get lucky enough to pull a permit is a good time if you are thinking high use season.

Since it's dam controlled you have to hope the flow schedule is with you if you want higher but min flows are fine. Below Echo if you catch the Yampa running makes Split Mountain all the better.
