Kootenai Falls in Montana

Has anyone run Kootenai Falls in MT? I'm heading up to Missoula this week and want to paddle while we're up there. Just looking for some Beta on this run and this drop. I've read that this falls is 15 feet and also read that it's 30 feet (maybe depending on where you launch). It's running 12,400 cfs. All info is appreciated.

Go Dawgs!!!

it should be good to go

I ran it a couple years ago and the river left side is pretty clean(although that was around 17K). I'd guess it to be around 20 feet. That section of river is sweet. Put on above the falls and paddle the 1.5 mile section. The water is BIG and playful. The 'V' wave is about 100 yards down from it and is definitely world class.

It's probably 20+ feet. Lot's of water. Post some pics here if you do it. I grew up in that area and until I started paddling myself, I never thought that things like that got run in kayaks. Yikers!

If you're a fisherman, bring your set, too. . .lunkers.

While in the area...

The real treat with Kootenai Falls is the Super Wave just about 100 yards down stream. When its running it has a reputation for being one of the best waves in the world. Its been featured in some of the older kayaking flicks like Paddlequest or other stuff from that era. Really that entire run has some sick play though and it rarely (never) runs out of water.
The falls are shallow so you want to catch them at high flows. Most folks run the far river left line but it has been run all over the place. Watch the over boof in that playboat!

While you are in the area research the Upper Upper Pack North of Sandpoint ID. It is a classic class V stretch with quality bedrock slides all over the place. The run is about 5 miles and it hammers folks if it is too high. I've caught it around this time of year before so you might be in luck. Ask Jeff France at Board of Missoula for more information. If you do tell him Greg Speicher said hi and that I sent you to him. He's definitely the most knowledgable shop owner in Missoula and he creeks everything. He's been on the UUPack too and can speak to prime flows and details on finding the run. Have fun!
