Kayaks and Delta?

I found a cheap international flight with Delta, but I gotta bring a boat and paddle. Their online info says kayaks not accepted... I have typically flown American and they have said no kayaks before, but I called my bag surfing equipment, payed the fee and got on no problem. Anybody know how serious Delta is about no boats? I don't want to take all my stuff to the counter and end up having to make arrangements to have somebody come and get it - plus I need it for the trip obviously.

i have heard good and bad things about Delta. sometimes boats go or sometimes they get denied. i flew internationally with Continental last year and my boat made it on, and some friends have had the same experience lately.

i'm flying to buenos aires next month with American and trying to bring my creek boat. i guess i'll call it surfing equipment.
