Here's my little video of my personal first D of Brush Creek at 1'.... a little shaky but it is pretty much the whole run...
Brush Creek is the most fun i have ever had creeking. slide after slide. and its not even on par with the real cali classics (look up superdink on Dinkey creek.... river gypsies have a great resource/ guidebook
other online Cali resources are dreamflows.com and boof.com
Sierra south is the paddle shop/outfitter, and a good place to start for info.
Kern River tubing, IK trips, SUP lessons, kayaking school, raft trips, tube rentals, river trips, rock climbing classes, and river gear.
I can put you in touch via FB with a couple locals i met if you end up going.
btw bakersfield is a whole nother story.... idk about the appeal of of living there, but i guess coming from NM it wouldnt be too unfamiliar...lol...
google or youtube 'Lower Kern' (below Lake Isabella) 'Upper Kern' (above kernville) and then also 'Drymeadow/Teacups', and 'Forks of the Kern'
i found videos of each of these sections to ponder. there is some heavy class VI- in the lower canyon o_0
I think there is seriously 60 or more miles of runnable whitewater.... (water dependant. it is dry ass desert there.) it reminds me of the Ark. section after section. lots of Class V that i geeked out on, but didnt go near. incredible stuff... and also lots of climbing and biking and offroading/motorsports crap.
oh and watch out for poison oak
