On another run that was once at the upper ends but is now just Class V standard that gets lapped. No wonder River Blading is taking off and kayaking is dying.

Missing kayaker found dead | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon | Outdoor News

Although I totally disagree with Greyson's Outside article that said extremeness killed kayaking, roller blading surged and died and it's not extreme.

Ugg, that's horrible. There have been way too many of these incidents this year. Was this on the lower Little White (the classic run) or the less run upper Little White? It says he was found upstream of the hatchery. Condolences to his friends and family.

Upper

I don't think the Little White has a lower but it may, the White Salmon has the Green Truss and the lower Husum run. So sad about Tumbleweed too, how many hundreds of people have swam out of Tumbleweed Rapid on the gorge. Condolences to the families for sure. So tragic for the OR kid to be a town councilman already.

In just this year alone there have been fatalities on the big south and the little white, as well as serious injuries on the embudo and the green. These creeks are all well known, frequently paddled creeks, and some of the more popular class V creeks in the country. It certainly highlights the risks and consequences of kayaking difficult whitewater.

The accidents involved several major hazards: logs, sieves, big drops onto rock, and punishing swims.

Its a brutal reminder that accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere. Judgement, skill, safety, and gear are part of the safety net that we all rely on to keep us safe on the river, but sometimes even those aren't enough and we hope we are lucky enough to make it out ok.

Sobering news that makes you think long and hard.
