Kayak classes near Boulder

Hi All,

I would like to get into kayaking. After outfitting my raft set up, I figured, what the heck, might as well get kayaking too. So, I live/work in Boulder and wondering if there were any local places that do good instruction. Any thoughts on renaissance adventure guides? Looking to do this over the winter so a pool class that does roll/brace type stuff. Also, any info on local pool sessions would be appreciated too.

I think you'll have good luck with RA guides. Confluence kayaks does sessions at DU during the winter too and I would expect good instruction from them. Another option would be to join the Colorado Whitewater Associate (CWWA) and I think they do some instruction clinics in Arvada starting sometime after the new year. Check their website.

No pool sessions in Boulder unless you have access to the CU rec center - pretty lame. Closest pool sessions are Arvada (Sundays), Golden (Tues/Thurs), Broomfield (Sat), maybe something in Longmont? Most are limited to winter, but I think RA does stuff in Golden year round.

Yes, they meet up at Chatfield Reservoir every Saturday though, so it's not necessarily any closer to you. They definitely know what they are doing, and they always have their lake classes in the morning until afternoon, concurrently with the Confluence Kayaks classes (also at Chatfield).

I took three classes when I started this year. A lake class, river class, and a follow-up roll class. It's kind of pricey, but probably worth it. Although, I didn't actually have a roll or a decent brace until afterward. I just watched some video and eventually it clicked for me (I ended up with a sweep roll, which I now do on both sides.).

I would highly recommend the EJ's Rolling and Bracing DVD, because that's what really did it for me. Also, there hasn't been a week that I haven't at least done a lake session since I started, so it definitely helps to be consistent.

Ps. George Meyers pool sessions will open up in the Winter. From what I gather, there's either a seasonal pass you can get for the pool, or you could pay $7 or so every Tuesday. I'm not sure about what might be available that's closer to you or even me though, but they run 'em late.

I am also looking for classes for my 9 year daughter. She has played with the ducky, but thinks she wanted to start doing a hard shell. We are in Longmont, so it would be great to go somewhere up north. Also what is the minimum age / size to start a kid kayaking? My 7 year old son also is interested, but I am not sure if he is big enough. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kayak classes in/near Boulder

Starting this year, Team Colorado Whitewater Racing is offering kayak classes to kids aged 8-16. It is a program that runs Monday-Friday 9am-1pm from June 16th-August 10th. The classes are set up for all levels of paddler, from never-evers to elite athletes or high level boaters who would like to hone their skills in a fun, group atmosphere. This program runs $80/week and includes rental of a boat, paddle, PFD, spray skirt, and helmet. Transportation is available to and from practice for an additional $50/week ($10/day, our team vehicle gets terrible gas mileage but can haul a lot of boats).

Team Colorado Whitewater Racing is a non-profit corporation set up with the aim of expanding the sport of kayaking in a safe, fun atmosphere. We have ACA instructors, former USA slalom national team members, USA Junior slalom team members, and world class racers for coaches. Our athletes have progressed from never having been in a kayak to racing for national teams across the world in a matter of years--something unheard of in a sport most people could spend a lifetime trying to master.

For more information, you can either visit us on the web at Team Colorado | Whitewater Racing or e-mail me directly at For the price, this is hands down the best kayak instruction program in the state. Don't miss your chance--space is limited!
