It's one thing if they require kayak registration to pay for needed improvements or maintenance at places we as kayakers use. My reading of the proposal in Idaho is that kayak registration will open up a revenue stream for the state government to pay for services and facilities that have nothing to do with kayaking and everything to do with providing ammenities to jet boaters and power boaters on Coeur d'Alene.
Have you ever used a dock to put on a river, or even a lake? Ever seen a sheriff's patrol on your local run? Do you want a sheriff's patrol on your local run? Do you think a sheriff would survive your local run? Have you ever said to yourself, while taking off some wilderness creek, "man, this place really needs a boat ramp."?
If you said yes to any of those questions, then I suspect you own a powerboat and like to wakeboard. These are the "improvements" that Butch Otter's plan for kayak registration in Idaho will fund. It has nothing to do with self-powered river users, who already pay for permits and parking on the most heavily used rivers in the state: Payettes, Snake, Salmon, Selway (which are all Federally administered anyway). Sign the petition, we don't want this to become a precident.
