If you're looking for some IV+ to V- creeking near Durango, I would suggest trying the top section on Lime. I've taken a few "Beginner Creekers" down to the top of Adrenaline, where they portaged the falls and then hiked out from there. (Some of them actually ran Adrenaline, since if you swim, it's a big pool). It's a bitch of a hike, but that upper section is just a fun combination of small ledges and slides, without the intimidating walls of the first gorge. To be honest, Lime isn't close to the difficulty of Vallecito, and most of the drops have recovery pools. The three spots that most folks swim are Adrenaline, S-Turn and Dragon's, and there a pretty big pools behind all three (and yes, I've swam them all). But, the only one you can portage is Adrenaline.
Now, I don't live there anymore & I haven't been down this year, so I don't know what level it's running; but generally speaking, if the put-in is a little scrapey, you'll have a good time. Grab a pair of binocs and you can see most of the upper section from Lime Creek Road.
